Tena Hoke, Chair, Board of Directors; Co-Founder
Like many of
Oregon's software engineers of her vintage, Tena began her career at Tektronix. She went on to work at Motorola, and then
at a variety of Portland-area high tech companies. Before
working in management, Tena enjoyed gaining perspective by switching
back and forth between software development and quality assurance.
As one of the founders of EASE, Tena was instrumental in
establishing the company's values, with a special regard for the
importance of finding a balance between work, family, and community
life. As past President of
EASE Software, she led the company through six consecutive years of selection as
one of the 100 Best Companies to Work For in Oregon. Tena is a Phi Beta Kappa
Computer Science graduate of
Washington State University,
and has an M.B.A. from the University of
Oregon. Tena is
interested in developing community: she mentors discussion groups for
the Northwest Earth Institute, and she
practices her consensus-building
skills at Trillium Hollow, the co-housing community she happily
inhabits. Tena likes
artichokes (above all other foods), asparagus, avocados and olives. Oddly enough, one of
Tena's unfulfilled goals in life is to study Latin.

Jack Klinker,
President; Co-founder
Jack's first exposure to microprocessors was the Intel 8008 while studying
physics at the University of Oregon. He subsequently transferred to Oregon State University and
graduated with a degree in electrical engineering. He started his
professional life at Tektronix designing an embedded system with one
of the first pre-production 6800 microprocessors that Motorola
shipped. After a career
of both hardware and software design at Tektronix, he began
contracting in the late eighties. His engineering interest has always been embedded systems and
working very close to the hardware. Another
hardware pursuit he enjoys is High Power
Rocketry.
He is in the process of launching a 35 pound 8 foot tall rocket
with 7680 N-sec rocket engine to an altitude of about 12,500 ft AGL. But
Jack's not just about hardware. An Oregon
native with family history in Oregon going back to 1847, Jack does his part to ensure the
continuing livability of Portland by volunteering as the
SWNI
(South West Neighborhoods Incorporated) Land Use Chair. In this capacity he
helps coordinate southwest Portland neighborhood activists
concerned about land use issues. Jack is also a traveler: Greece and Turkey
will be the next destination. In preparation
for this trip he recently completed Robert Fagel's translations of
Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, Virgil's
Aenied
and several classic Greek plays about the Trojan War.

Bev Hearth , Treasure of the
Board; Senior Software Gardener; Co-founder
Bev majored in computer Science at Oregon State University and
after graduation went straight to Intel. (Do not pass go, do not
collect $200). She also worked at a small graphics company
before finding her true calling as a contractor. In 1990 she
joined with other contractors to form EASE and became the
corporate treasurer. She actually enjoys reading financial
statements! Despite her corporate duties Bev continues to earn
her living as a contractor. Her title of choice is Senior
Software Gardener. The principles of Code Gardening are:
1. If you plan a garden it is easier to maintain;
2. There are always a few weeds and bugs to get rid of;
3. You transfer plants from one plot to another so they can
thrive;
4. You spread a certain amount of fertilizer around;
5. Sometimes you ending up maintaining someone else's garden and
this teaches you how to leave your own;
6. Sometimes you just have to throw everything out and start
over.
Bev also aspires to practice the philosophy of the
servant-leader
and this is evident in her influence at client sites. She
consciously attempts to counteract the inherent sterility of
engineering by looking for ways to improve the lives of those
around her in everyday interactions. In another servant-leader
role Bev and her husband live with her
Newfoundland Baba Ram Dag,
nicknamed Buddha, and Buddha's two cats named Mahar-shalal hash
baz and Mooshak.
