Travel Like a Vagabond! *

Welcome! My Traveler's Handbook and Backpack Travel Guide for the Third World is back together again! I began writing this traveler's handbook in 1991, before I had even heard of the World Wide Web. I had finished 7 of the 12 planned chapters of the "book", before I tried selling it to publishing houses. Guess what? Yeah, Nobody was interested.
Later, when I started putting some of my other completed works up on the Web, I added several chapters from the "Traveler's Handbook" on my first (1995) edition of Randy's Travel Page. They included the sections on Planning, Security, Shopping, Transportation, and What to Take. Over the next couple of years I slowly re-edited, updated, and finished all the chapters, until the book was pretty much completed, on-line, by 1998. Yes, it's all right here -- over 1.1 million bytes! -- it's free, and it's much easier for me to update regularly. (Last update: June, 2004)
The original (1991, unpublished) hard-copy version had a number of my
salty travel anecdotes and brief traveler's tales sprinkled around in
side-bars. These now reside on my
"Glimpses of the Road" web page.
They are not reproduced on these "handbook" pages, but these first-person
anecdotes are linked to within this document, wherever you see
this "binocular" symbol:
So, without further ado, here is the Introduction and ten highly detailed
chapters of Third World Travel Tips, which cover most of what I've got to
say about the subject.
There is no specific destination guide information
in here, just general information on how you can be a more savvy traveler.
This book is a part of the Travel Like a
Vagabond section of Randy's Travel
Page. I hope you find some things in here to inform,
prepare, and maybe even entertain you.
By the way, if you'd rather print out the entire document and read it
off-line, a Downloadable MS-WORD version is now available,
See below; but the on-line version is the most up to date.
Happy Trails!
-- Randy
